Old Tappan Soccer "settles" for four indoor championships
Busy weekend for Old Tappan indoor soccer teams as seven teams competed in the Championship game of their leagues.  In a classic thriller, the 3rd/4th graders competed for the Harnisch Cup as the Old Tappan Storm faced rivals Old Tappan Rampage.  Despite the Storm jumping on top for a 1-0 lead on an Evan Goldzweig goal, the Storm battled back to tie the game 1-1 to send the game into sudden death overtime.  The crowd and the players were on edge as every touch of the ball could have ended the game.  But the game was not settled until penalty kick stage arrived.  The Storm finally finished off the season, winning in penalty kicks 4-3, topping a sweep of the regular season and the Harnisch Cup.  Coach Peter Jung said, "That was the closest game we played all year.  The Rampage really made a nice run in the playoffs and we needed our best efforts to pull this one out.  I am very proud of the team".

In another 3rd/4th grade battle, the Travel U10 boys team, clearly the underdogs against rival Hillsdale in the PVISL Championship.  The OT boys had lost to Hillsdale twice during the regular season and were determined to avenge the previous losses.  After going down 1-0, the Old Tappan U10 boys stormed back to capture their first PVISL Championship 6-1.  Coach Art Carril comemnted, "We said from day one that the Championship was our season goal.  We improved every game from the beginning of the season and played our best game when it counted."

In the highest profile game of the day, the U12 boys team faced a determined Demarest team in teh PVISL Champ[ionship game.  The teams had a combined six Academy players on the rosters, which led to a high quality soccer game.  Demarest's star player had scored all five goals in the semi-final game against River Vale and Old Tappan had to find a defensive answer to shut him.  Devin Usal and Jason Wong supplied all the defense and goaltending to shut down Demarest and limit their star to one shot on goal for the full forty minutes.  Old Tappan forwards Aiden LaMorte and Carter Gwon scored two goals each to turn an even match into a 7-0 blowout victory for Old Tappan.

The U14 girls exacted revenge on New Milford in their PVISL Championship game, defeating New Milford 8-1 in a convincing victory.  Led by veterans Kelly Walsh and Amanda Tripodi, Old Tappan finished an undefeated season and playoff run with a 10-0 overall record.

Soccer is a wonderful sport for children.  It provides players with continuous action, lots of running and exercise, and a chance to interact with other players both on and off the field.  It is unique in that it does not isolate a particular individual and skill (such as batting in baseball, or foul shot in basketball) so that players of all skill levels can be combined together, making it comfortable and enjoyable for all.

Old Tappan offers a variety of programs designed to accommodate and challenge everyone interested in playing, regardless of talent level.  For the younger child, we have a program designed to introduce the sport and develop the basic skills required going forward.  As the child gets older, there are a couple of options for play based on the child's level of interest and/or talent.  While we encourage even the weakest players to continue to play and enjoy themselves every year, we also challenge and advance the best players to allow them to continue to grow and excel.  A description of the programs can be found below.

Volunteerism is a big part of our program here in Old Tappan.  We rely on parents to coach, provide administration, and to work the snack stands.   Even if you have never played soccer, when you register please note the parent involvement area and indicate some level of support.
